Troubleshooting
1. I feel overwhelmed by all the items in my Zone of Control, and thereâs practically nothing in my Zone of Non-Control!
Donât worry if your Zone of Control ends up being really huge and you discover that thereâs actually very little in your Zone of Non-Control. Some people get worried if they see that thereâs a lot in the Zone of Control, because they feel daunted by all the tasks. If this happens to you, let me reframe the situation by suggesting that having a lot of things you can do to facilitate your goals is actually a good thing. Your Zone of Controlâs long list of action items is giving you a variety of choices on how to spend your time, and all of those choices will help you to feel empowered and productive because theyâre all prescreened activities that were specifically identified as things that would help advance you toward your goal. My list of things I can do to help grow my practice and my brand is still practically endless, and I actually like it this way. Itâs much more anxiety-provoking to be in a situation that makes you feel powerless to help yourself than to be surrounded by potential ideas and action steps.
Try choosing just one item on the list, whichever one feels the least intimidating or the most fun, and see if you can use it to help yourself get moving. If you still feel overwhelmed by your Zone of Control list, consider the To-Do List with Emotions exercise in chapter 9 of this book; or, of course, thereâs always the option of asking a therapist or coach to review the list with you as well to see if adding some self-care might be helpful. Depending on the material in your Zone of Control action list, you might also be able to delegate some of the material. For example, Sean gave his assistant a list of all the people he wanted to ask for help with mock interviews and had the assistant do the legwork of creating draft emails for him to send requesting their support. Even this small relief of âadmin burdenâ helped him a lot, since he can sometimes get bottlenecked on âlittle things,â like composing relatively simple emails if those emails pertain to a broader topic that carries emotional weight.2 Even if you donât have an assistant, you may be able to get a friend to help or barter with you on certain tasksâasking for help when needed is a high functioning thing to do!
2. My Zone of Control seems tiny, and my Zone of Non-Control seems huge.
If you complete the exercise and find that your Zone of Non-Control is actually very large, and youâre worried that there may not be enough material in your Zone of Control for you to be effective at meeting your goal, I suggest that you consider asking a trusted friend or therapist to review the list with you. Sometimes just having a brainstorming session with someone
